There is one thing about daylight in the winter. It never arrives long before I'm ready to get up. Another thing about winter is that warm weather never arrives at all. I might give moving to Florida another chance, but not during hurricane season. I'm allergic to high winds.

I called Lou to get his morning off to a good start.

"Are you ready to meet another set of Applegates?"

"If I say 'no' will you go by yourself?"

"No, I'll send my next-door neighbor over to keep you company."

"Didn't I tell you I already have a pet skunk? By the way, Cy, since we're going to meet these people, don't you think it might be appropriate to take them a gift?"

"I wish you'd suggested that before we dropped off the candy and fruit basket downtown. What did you have in mind?"

"Nothing lavish. Maybe a nice centerpiece for their coffee table."

"Have you been there, Lou? How do you know if they have a coffee table? I think maybe we should hold off until we find out if they murdered the woman. Don't you think?"

"Shouldn't we think of them as innocent until proven guilty?"

"I guess you're right. What are you willing to buy them?"

"I think you should pay, Cy. It would mean more coming from you."

"I'll be glad to hand it to them as long as you're willing to pay."

"I guess you're right. We should wait until after we get to know them. You know. Learn their tastes first."

"Now, do you want to waste some more time, or would you like to get this case out of the way, so we can get back to retirement?"

"Well, there is one other thing. I can't sing Christmas carols anymore, and Valentine's Day has come and gone. Do you by any chance know any St. Patrick's Day songs?"

"It's a Long Way to Tipperary."

"Is that a St. Patrick's Day song?"

"I don't think so."

"So, are we going there?"

"You might be. I'm not."

"Is Tipperary in Ireland?"

"I think so. You might go to Ireland and find out."

"I'd be glad to, Cy. I just need your credit card information."

"It's Cy Dekker. Visa. Now, is there anything else? Otherwise, I'm ready to talk to these people so we can get this case over with and get back to being retired. And, Lou, take a double dose of your medication. Your regular dosage isn't working."

Lou didn't pay attention to anything I said. But his version of When Irish Eyes Are Smiling was better than most songs he sings. He even sounded a little Irish. I wondered if he had been taking lessons. I wasn't going to ask. He might sing another song. It didn't matter. I hung up before he finished.

I thought about taking Lightning when we went to meet the other set of Applegates, but instead took my Sienna and turned the radio off before I got to Lou's place.

I pulled up and he came dashing out. Well, as dashing as he was willing to attempt in the cold weather.

"Lou, you're wearing a new scarf.
